KILSYTH RANGERS SEASON 2008-2009
PRE- SEASON FIXTURES AND NEWS

Tuesday 21st July.

Rangers kicked of their preparations for the new season with a series
of friendly games this week; on Tuesday evening they had Whitburn
Juniors visit Duncansfield for the opening game. They made a great
start going ahead in the first few minutes when Ritchie Bowers ran
through to score, within quarter of an hour Andy McGinty had made it
two with a header following a corner. Whitburn pulled one back midway
through the first half but Paul Doyle scored just before the interval
to restore the two goal advantage. Rangers made wholesale changes at
the interval and it was a more even affair in the second half with
Whitburn getting a second goal with quarter of an hour remaining to
complete the scoring. A good display by Rangers in their first match
with newcomers Callum Scott, Barry Neville and Francis Kelly all
catching the eye.

Thusday 23rd July.

On Thursday evening Alloa sent their U-19 squad through and it was
another entertaining match with again some very good football from both
sides. Rangers again opened the scoring with an early goal and that was
how it remained until halftime although Rangers had quite a few chances
to increase their advantage. Again a number of changes were made at
halftime and Alloa came back with two goals inside a minute early in
the second half, then increased it to three before Rangers regrouped
and hit back with two fine goals late in the game to make it 3-3 at the
final whistle. Another interesting match for the reasonable crowd of
fans who had come along on the evening to assess Rangers prospects for
the new season. The young trialist keeper, Connor O'Boyle, also Kevan
Byle, David Black, Dallan Goktepi, John Millar and Graham Smith all
showed up well at some part of the game and it is likely that at least
two or three of the newcomers who took part in either of these games
will become parrt of the squad.

The final pre-season game takes place this Saturday (25th July) with a
visit to Bonnyrigg Rose and then the opening fixture in the Sectional
League cup is next Saturday (1st August) when Cumbernauld United and
Rangers meet at Guys Meadow. Wednesday 5th August Rangers have Rob-Roy
visit Duncansfield and Saturday 8th they are away to Dunipace. The
opening game in the League programme is the following Saturday 15th
August when Rangers travel to East Kilbride. All evening kick-offs 7-
15pm, Saturdays 2pm.

Rangers completed their scheduled programme of friendlies with a 3-3
drawn match at Bonnyrigg on Saturday. This was a very usefull workout
against last seasons East Region Superleague champions and they were
certainly not overawed by the occasion. The first half was pretty
evenly shared in terms of play with Rangers having probably the better
of chances created although it took forty minutes before a goal from
Sichi put them into the lead. Bonnyrigg scored almost on the halftime
whistle to go in level. A few changes of personnel were made at
halftime and within nine minutes Rangers' trialist striker hit a superb
shot on the turn to put them into the lead once more. Again Rose hit
back fairly quickly and levelled it at two apiece before they were
awarded another penalty (they had already missed one in the first half)
which keeper Connor O'Boyle saved at the post. A few minutes later and
the referee, who seemed determined to award Rose the match saw fit to
give them yet another, this time it found the net and Rangers went
behind for the first time in the match. Near the end though and Graham
Black got a third for Rangers and justice was done, a draw was a fair
result and Rangers can be happy with their pre-season preparations so
far. The only sour note was that keeper Micheal Dukes injured a finger
in the pre-match warm-up and could be out for several weeks.
The game this saturday in the Sectional league cup, due to be played
at Guys Meadow, has now been switched to Duncansfield as ongoing pitch
renovation has not been completed in time.

Linlithgow and St. Andrews

Wee Gers beat BIG GERS
Kilsyth Rangers 2 v Glasgow Rangers 1.              Monday, 30th April, 1965.   Match report from some paper or other.

From the depths to the heights. Kilsyth Rangers who had sent their fans into the depths with a woeful display against Bonnybridge the previous Friday took them to the heights of elation by licking the big Rangers at Duncansfield on Monday.
Yes, they gave the Ibrox men a sound beating here. Only the result was close. In every other way Kilsyth were well ahead. They beat the big fellas to the ball all the time and worried them into getting rid of it quickly. For all that the homesters did not scramble or get confused. They found their man with consistent accuracy and,  indeed, any good football that was on tap came from the homesters. They played inspired stuff and made their opponents look a bunch of very raw juveniles. The big Rangers were very big. Here was quantity but little sign of quality. We waited for the power play, it never came. The famous Kithenbrand hardly got a look at the ball. He got practically got no support and was well shackled by young Cowie, who played with that verve and enthusiasm which pervaded the whole side. Ibrox attack was almost non-existent. Onlt towards the end did they give the homesters any trouble. Kilsyth forwards came away with a brand of stuff we had thought they had forgotten how to produce. Querrie turned shots and headers in from all angles. There was Douglas harassing the defence, dashing down the wing, chopping over lovely balls. And Kelly and newcomer Love, and McGregor too, roasting the life put of the big chaps.  Yes, from Freebairn outwards Kilsyth Blues were right on their game, gone were the Bonnybridge blues.

Right from the start Kilsyth set the pace. In five minutes Douglas gave them the lead. He tried an overhead kick from a McClure throw-in and keeper Ritchie watched the ball sail past him and into the net. It was Kilsyth all the way with Querrie turning in some shots which were held by Ritchie. No2 came in 37 minutes. Querrie's shot came off the keeper and Douglas was there the prod the ball to the net. McGregor almost made it three with a terrific shot from 25 yards which Ritchie saved. Elliot whipped the pins from Querrie but the ref said no penalty. And so to half time With Kilsyth deservedly two up.

Halftime-----Kilsyth, 2; Glasgow Rangers, 0.

The Ibrox line-up was changed. Logie was brought on in place of Menzies, McCulloch and Scott switched wings. We were expecting some devastating action from the big Rangers now. But no, the Kilsyth men still had the upper hand. Only towards the close we saw some Ibrox attacking, but there was little method and Kilsyth men were too quck to lot the big men get teed up for a shot. Quite in contrast was the way the homesters got together. They had one particularly fine piece of combined work. A Westwater free-kick was passed to Querrie by McClure, Alex placed the ball in front of Kelly whose shot was scrambled clear at the post by Ritchie. The closing seconds brought a consolation goal for the visitors. Dodds , from well out on the left, sent a free-kick across goal and Kitchenbrand's head sent the ball flashing to the net. At last we had seen Kitch in action.
A most enjoyable evening for the home fans.
Rangers (Kilsyth) please give this sort of stuff more often, say when visiting Petershill and Ashfield.

Teams: Kilsyth; Freebairn, Westwater, McAndrew, Mochan, Cowie, McClure, Kelly, McGregor, Querrie, Love, Douglas.

Glasgow, Ritchie, Moles, Dodds, Menzies, Elliot, Thomson, McCulloch, Arniston, Kitchenbrand, Walker, Scott.

           Referee, A. McClintock, Bishopbriggs.
