LESMAHAGOW JUNIORS 1 KILSYTH RANGERS 3
Rangers eased through to the next round of the West Region cup with a
good win over Lesmahagow but they did it the hard way; playing for the
last hour reduced to ten men when Graeme Tough received his marching
orders after a second yellow card within ten minutes. However they hit
back straight away and had built up a comfortable three goal lead by
the interval which allowed them to sit back to a degree in the second
period. Lesmahagow enjoyed a better second half but were unable to make
much headway until late in the game, the task was always beyond them.
Not much between the sides in the opening spell, Rangers were getting
used to the pitch with its infamous hills in the two corners below the
towering bank which overlooks the ground. Tough saw his first card of
the day for a rather needless foul early in the game, rangers began to
assert their advantage and had a few attempts on goal although few
caused Wilson much trouble. Lesmahagow, likewise, were not getting any
of their shots on target and it was stalemate until Callum SCOTT picked
up a ball just outside the home penalty area, went on a run, beating
two defenders before firing a low shot top the far corner of the net. A
few minutes later and Rangers were down to ten; Tough getting a second
yellow card when he made a rash late tackle. The game was barely
restarted before David WATERS ran in to send a cracking shot to the
roof of the net to put Rangers two ahead. At the other end Dukes had to
make a good blocking save as Lesmahagow attempted to reduce the
deficit. It was not at all obvious that the home side enjoyed a
numerical advantage and almost on the interval Darren Dalrymple made a
run into the box before being downed. Chris ZOK took the resulting
spotkick and sent the keeper the wrong way which was just as well as
his efort barely trickled over the line.
Lesmahgow decided to go for broke making three personnel changes at
halftime and did put up much more of a challenge after the resumption
of play. They were rarely troubling Dukes though; he had only a few
saves to make in the first twenty minutes or so of the second half.
Rangers made a change when Kelly took a knock, bringing on Sichi and he
was soon making an impression with some very good runs into the Gow
box. The home side were not finished yet though, and Dukes had to make
a very fine save from a shot by Logan. With the game entering its final
phase Rangers made another change, bringing on a defender, Tom Jarvis,
for Dalrymple who had put up another fine display. a minute later
though and some dilly dallying in the Rangers defence let LOGAN in to
give Lesmahagow a glimmer of hope of saving the match. They put on some
pressure for the next five minutes or so but could not make another
breakthrough and Rangers held firm till the final whistle. Another good
win but to go down to ten men so early in the game against a better
class of opposition might have resulted in a different ending.
