WEST OF SCOTLAND CUP 2009/10
NEW COIN AUTOMATIC WEST REGION CUP FIRST ROUND              17/10/09

LESMAHAGOW JUNIORS 1  KILSYTH RANGERS 3

Rangers eased through to the next round of the West Region cup with a
good win over Lesmahagow but they did it the hard way; playing for the
last hour reduced to ten men when Graeme Tough received his marching
orders after a second yellow card within ten minutes. However they hit
back straight away and had built up a comfortable three goal lead by
the interval which allowed them to sit back to a degree in the second
period. Lesmahagow enjoyed a better second half but were unable to make
much headway until late in the game, the task was always beyond them.

Not much between the sides in the opening spell, Rangers were getting
used to the pitch with its infamous hills in the two corners below the
towering bank which overlooks the ground. Tough saw his first card of
the day for a rather needless foul early in the game, rangers began to
assert their advantage and had a few attempts on goal although few
caused Wilson much trouble. Lesmahagow, likewise, were not getting any
of their shots on target and it was stalemate until Callum SCOTT picked
up a ball just outside the home penalty area, went on a run, beating
two defenders before firing a low shot top the far corner of the net. A
few minutes later and Rangers were down to ten; Tough getting a second
yellow card when he made a rash late tackle. The game was barely
restarted before David WATERS ran in to send a cracking shot to the
roof of the net to put Rangers two ahead. At the other end Dukes had to
make a good blocking save as Lesmahagow attempted to reduce the
deficit. It was not at all obvious that the home side enjoyed a
numerical advantage and almost on the interval Darren Dalrymple made a
run into the box before being downed. Chris ZOK took the resulting
spotkick and sent the keeper the wrong way which was just as well as
his efort barely trickled over the line.

Lesmahgow decided to go for broke making three personnel changes at
halftime and did put up much more of a challenge after the resumption
of play. They were rarely troubling Dukes though; he had only a few
saves to make in the first twenty minutes or so of the second half.
Rangers made a change when Kelly took a knock, bringing on Sichi and he
was soon making an impression with some very good runs into the Gow
box. The home side were not finished yet though, and Dukes had to make
a very fine save from a shot by Logan. With the game entering its final
phase Rangers made another change, bringing on a defender, Tom Jarvis,
for Dalrymple who had put up another fine display. a minute later
though and some dilly dallying in the Rangers defence let LOGAN in to
give Lesmahagow a glimmer of hope of saving the match. They put on some
pressure for the next five minutes or so but could not make another
breakthrough and Rangers held firm till the final whistle. Another good
win but to go down to ten men so early in the game against a better
class of opposition might have resulted in a different ending.

SECTIONAL LEAGUE CUP 2009/10
SECTIONAL LEAGUE CUP  QUALIFYING SECTION 8

CUMBERNAULD UNITED 1 KILSYTH RANGERS 1

Not the start that Rangers were looking for, or probably expected, in
their first game in the League cup. A draw is not a disaster, but
probably won't be god enough in the quest to go through to the knock-
out stages of the competition but it was all that they deserved in
reality. They had much more of the game and created a myriad of scoring
chances but poor finishing and some shocking misses in front of open
goals put paid to their chances. Even when the Cumbernauld keeper was
dismissed late in the game they could not take advantage. A win against
Rob-Roy in midweek is now needed if they are to progress.

Rangers had the best of the opening exchanges and should have opened
their account when Dalrymple raced through but his shot went straight
to the keeper. A little later and Duffy had a good effort from long
range but it was a little off target. Rangers were lucky when O'Boyle
miskicked in an effort to clear the ball but made a good recovery.
Duffy had another chance, this time his shot went into the side
netting. Just after the half hour and the deadlock was broken when
McGINTY headed in from a corner kick. Right on the interval and United
had a shot come off the inside of the Rangers post but offside had
already been given.

Martin came on for Bowers early in the second half and both teams were
making, and missing, good scoring chances. Really trhe standard of
finishing was pretty abysmal but eventually something had to give and
with around twenty minute left United got a deserved equaliser when
their main danger man, DUFFY, ran in on goal, rounded the keeper, and
placed the ball in an empty net. Rangers made a big effort to come back
and Dalrymple, who had been probably Rangers best player on the day,
tried a thirty five yard wind assisted lob, but it dropped just over
the bar. Martin had several chances but his touch was just not there
and he was lucky not to get booked when he took a dive in the box. Then
United were reduced to ten when Buchanan was red carded for handling
outside his area but still Rangers could not take advantage and indeed
in some breakaways it was the visitors who looked like snatching a
winner. In almost the last few seconds Martin had the ball at his feet
some three yard from goal but still somehow contrived to put it past;
that just about summed up Rangers day.

KILSYTH; O'Boyle, Scott, Jarvis, Murray, Mcginty, Neville, Kelly,
Millar, Bowers, Dalrymple, Sichi.
Subs. Martin, Carr, McMenemy, Watters, Meechan.

CUMBERNAULD; Buchanan, Bristow, McConville, Marsh, Deerie, Jarvis,
Burns, McPhee, Duffy, Steele, McAndie.
Subs. Mills, Elliot, Allan, O'Neill, Templeton.

SECTIONAL LEAGUE CUP - QUALIFYING SECTION 8  5/8/09

KILSYTH RANGERS 0  KIRKINTILLOCH ROB-ROY  0

No goals, but plenty of entertainment for the fans in this local derby
last Wednesday evening the outcome of which could have been crucial in
who goes through to the next stage of the tournament. In the event a
draw, together with the result between the other two teams means that
there is still all to play for in Rangers match at Dunipace on
Saturday. Any one of the four sides could still conceivably go through
given the right combination of results.

It was Rob-Roy who made the best start, they had forced a couple of
corners within the first minute although neither caused any concern to
the home defence. They were almost gifted a goal though just a couple
of minutes later when O'Boyle put a short kick-out straight to Moore;
the Roy striker made a hash of his chance fotunately for Rangers. Moore
tried to make amends with a good strike in ten minutes but O'Boyle made
an equally good save. It had been all Rob-Roy up till this point but
Rangers started to come into the game as the first half progressed
although their efforts on goal were rather few. The visitors, for the
most part had dominated the first half, but as the interval beckoned
they looked no nearer to actually translating their advantage into
goals. Just before halftime moore wnt off with a knock and was replaced
by Mackie. Tough was spoken to for a foul  but escaped without seeing a
card.

It was a fairly even affair from the restart but such shots on goal as
there were came mainly from Rob-Roy. On the hour mark Rangers brought
Sichi on for Kelly in an attempt to invigorate their attacking
potential and he did begin to produce some chances. Roy also made
another couple of changes in an attempt to get the goal that their
territorial advantage had so far failed to produce. Rangers were far
from out of it though and Dalrymple had a couple of good efforts which
might have broken the deadlock. The closest to a goal came from a
corner  when Bell punched out a McGinty header which looked netbound. A
minor incident almost escalated into a free for all but quick
intervention by the referee meant that it ended with just a couple
yellow cards although Tough was lucky thet his first half foul had not
been penalised. There were further chances for both sides but it
finally ended with no score and a point apiece, the final matches on
Saturday will decide who progresses.

KILSYTH; O'Boyle, Scott, Jarvis, Doyle, Murray, Tough, Kelly, Neville,
D Watters, McGinty, Dalrymple.
Subs. Sichi, Miller, McPeake, Carr, McMenemy.

ROB-ROY; Bell, Ward, McInally, McDonald, Lennox, Carberry, Fulton,
Murray, Hughes, Moore, Anderson.
Subs. Mackie, McQuilken, Docherty, Maxwell, Gray, Vaugh, Cawley.

SECTIONAL LEAGUE CUP QUALIFYING SECTION 8   8/8/09

DUNIPACE JUNIORS 3  KILSYTH RANGERS 3

Both sides here went into the game knowing that they had a chance of
going through to the quarter final stage of the competition depending
on the outcxome of the other match in the section; in the event a draw
was of no use to either as Rob-Roy scored a decisive win over
Cumbernauld to go through. However it was an entertaining spectacle for
the fans with some good goals and a spirited comeback by Dunipace after
going behind by three goals. Rangers can be verey pleased with the
debut display by new striker, Chris Zok, who had two excellent goals
but defensive frailties need to be addressed.

Dunipace made a couple of chances early on, but Rangers soon came
back and Zok was prominent with a good strike just over the bar, then
another attempt well saved by Hutton. Rangers were getting the better
of things generally and they went ahead when ZOK scored with a diving
header following a freekick into the dunipace penalty area. A minute
later though and Dunipace were very unlucky with a shot which came off
the base of the Rangers post. Tough was fortunate not to be booked
after a clash with McLafferty near the interval which arrived with
Rangers just value their lead.

Rangers restarted well with some very good play and within six minutes
they were two up, David WATTERS netting with another diving header from
a fine pass by Tough. Three minutes later and ZOK had his second; a
pass from McGinty allowing him an easy tap-in. It looked like the game
was won at this point and Gallacher came on for Tough. Dunipace pulled
one back when McILDUFF hit a fine shot low to the corner of the net and
then four minutes later he also had his double with a defence busting
run and shot. Rangers had lost some of their composure and made another
two changes and although they had another couple of chances it was
Dunipace who got the final goal in almost the last minute of the game;
substitute SIBBOLD was the scorer. A fair result, the real business of
the season begins next Saturday when Rangers visit East Kilbride for
their first league game and the quest for promotion back to the Premier
division.

KILSYTH; O'Boyle, Scott, Jarvis, Doyle, Murray, McGinty, Miller,
Tough, Zok, D Watters, Dalrymple
Subs. Kelly, Sichi, McMenemy, Carr, Gallacher, Upton.

DUNIPACE; Hutton, McCafferty, McPhail, G McMillan, C McMillan, Orr,
Kane, Rodger, McIlduff, Cullen.
Subs. Sibbold, Gibson, Stewart, Meighan.
