GLENAFTON ATHLETIC 3 KILSYTH RANGERS 0
A fairly decisive win for Glenafton in the end, but the scoreline does
not really give credit to Rangers for their contribution to what was a
hard fought, and entertaining game of football. A soft penalty, and two
defensive errors, were what cost Rangers at least a point, plus the
failure to cash in in at least one or two of the many good chances they
created.
Rangers started well and from a corner made a good opening within the
first minute, Zok got a touch, but the ball went just wide of the post.
there was some quite attractive football from both teams although it
was Rangers who were making the best chances in the early stages,
indeed it was quarter of an hour before Glenafton had their first shot
at goal. Zok had another good try with a lob which beat the keeper
initially although he managed to get back and catch it on the line.
After Rangers early onslaught had subsided a little Glenafton began to
show their potential with some very good play with former Hearts star,
Jose Quitongo, prominent in many of their moves. In forty minutes
Ramsay made a run into Rangers box and went down although there seemed
minimal contact, he probably had taken note of a similar incident
involving Arsenal and Celtic a few days earlier. The penalty was given
though, and after some delay and several bookings, was converted by
CONNELLY, to put the home side. the protests continued before the
restart and earned Tough a needless booking.
Rangers had replaced Neville with Martin at halftime in an effort to
add some more punch up front and soon he was in the thick of the action
putting some good balls into the Glens goalmouth. Then disaster struck
when Rangers failed to clear their lines when they had the chance and
HARTE scored a second from free header. Rangers might have been down
but were certainly not out and continued to push forward, the chances
were coming but the finishing was not quite up to the standard of the
leading up work. A series of corners still failed to produce the goal
which would have pulled Rangers right back into the game and a further
substitution was made, Miller coming on for Tough. Glenafton were
absorbing all the pressure and were always dangerous on the break and
with just ten minute remaining another defensive lapse let QUITONGO
break away, he showed his class by cleverly rounding Dukes and placing
the ball in the corner of the net to conclude the scoring. A lesson for
Rangers from a very strong home side who must be amongst the favourites
for promotion this season.
